When this momma contacted me about a girlie session for her daughters…I was all for it! After having to reschedule a couple of times {thank you tornado storms!} we ended up with pettiskirts in the park on the perfect evening! Elly and Kylee have been in the nest before; Kylee actually holds my record for the most setups in a newborn session. I can’t believe how much she has changed since I saw them at Christmas…she looks much more like her daddy now, while Elly still takes after her mommy. Both girls were just as good as can be and had a great time getting their toes dirty crawling and running all over the park!
Elly was making pies {grass ones I think } and Kylee was paying close attention!

Say cheese Kylee!

Kylee turns 1 next month and can already stand a little on her own

Why I love pettis…

In July, J + J and I spent a morning capturing their anticipation of a princess-to-be. Her name is Lily, and at six days old here, is already mommy’s princess and daddy’s girl. She weighed just over 7 lbs at birth but is quite the eater and already well over 8 lbs. Indeed, she ate four times during the session! I can just picture her full of delicious baby chub in no time and I hope she comes back to visit me so I can see how she’s grown. She does love cuddles and is already such a social girl when she’s awake. Lily seems quite the thinker, too, with her cute little furrowed brow. Just darling!

So I wished for boys, and they’ve come! This babe actually arrived before I could even get a consult in with Mom and Dad. Mr. Connor is a little sweetheart! He looked tiny in the chair but he’s actually 8 lbs heavy and 21″ long. I love love love his hair. Though he was sleepy when he arrived, he fought sleep for a long time before he finally snuggled down. It can be hard to do wakey shots of newborns because they wiggle and cross their eyes, but it pays off in the end to get that shot where they’re looking right at you. I am always amazed at how aware these babes are, even though they’re brand new. They know when they’re in a new place and when there’s new people and even though he’s only a week old, Connor didn’t want to miss out on any fun!
Yes, he does LOOK tired ;D

Mom brought some things, including a beautiful owl quilt she made and an owl hat set that was a gift, which I just love. When I put Connor in the basket and the hat on, suddenly Dad was saying, that’s bird’s asleep! Baskets never fail ;D

When Mom and Dad saw the boat they wanted it immediately. We’re canoeists, they said. So perfect!

Who-hooo!

Before I started this business {and anytime I’m not busy with it} I’m trying to convince the girls to do photoshoots for ideas in my head. I realized recently I’ve rarely shot them at all lately, and that’s bad! We had a quick shoot for a friend’s props the other day, and luckily they both jumped back in and wanted some more photos. This is the one I was going for…

These are what we got first

In the end though, they came through, just like always. There is something about photographing them that grounds me. And at the same time it fills me up with something I can’t explain. Such beautiful, funny, smart, quirky, happy, fragile, loving little people. I’m so grateful they’re mine.

Some of you knew hubby and I had planned to do a trash the dress shoot…what I didn’t really tell everyone was that we ended up doing it on our Hawaiian vacation! We celebrated 10 years of marriage this year, so what a perfect time to do it! We are light travellers and planned on flying standby, so I had to fit my ballgown sized dress plus six days of clothing into a CARRYON! With my mom’s help, we rolled it up tight and secured it with packing plastic on a roll. At least it left us room for souvenirs on the way home!
We planned to do the trash the dress shoot while driving the road to Hana, a day long excursion along the north coast of Maui. Hubby decided he didn’t want to be dressed for pics that whole day, so could we please take the couple photos at this really pretty park near our condo the morning before? I really wanted to do it at sunset instead, but he wanted to get it out of the way so we could do something else in the evening. I agreed, and we got all dolled up and headed off to Charley Young park in Kihei, Maui at 9:30 in the morning. When we parked, he didn’t get out of the car, but turned to me and said “So I hired a photographer to do the photos this morning…I thought it would be good to have nice pics of us together.” How sweet! thought I, and teared up at his romantic gesture.
So we wait, and when we see the photog arrive, we walk over to say hello. That’s when hubby says “So this is Bruce, he’s going to take the photos, and this is Reverend Kolleen, who is going to do our vow renewal ceremony.” Okay, here come the tears. {And they pretty much kept going on and off until about 1:00 that afternoon if you want to know the truth}.

Kolleen walked us over to the park part {where we had visited the night before to ‘scout’ the location and ‘plan’ our shoot…little schemer he was} and explained how everything would go. Nervous? But so happy!

Rev. Kolleen was sweet and funny. She explained Hawaiian traditions and put together a lovely ceremony…hubby even chose a poem for her to add! I can’t remember what we’re laughing at in this one…

Um, yeah, I kind of love him.

So this is the part with the last surprise. Rev. Kolleen got to the part about rings, and just talked about our original ones and even asked to see them. At one point she mispronounced ring as wing, and we all laughed and made reference to The Princess Bride…which made sense cause we were getting MAUI’d…get it? Well, you’ll just have to watch the movie then. Then she said something about the presentation of a new ring…and there he was pulling a box from his pocket! And, that’s me crying again. Now, the back story to this ring is that when we got married we paid for most of the wedding ourselves, and we didn’t have a lot to spend on a ring. When we were shopping he felt bad about the size of the ring {though I loved it} and the store lady said “Don’t worry, you can always get her a bigger ring for your 10th anniversary.” So that was the little joke, since I never intended for that to really happen. Joke’s on me!

Shaka!

Bruce was great with the shoot after, he even let me make some suggestions for poses…the shaka thing is totally hubby though And probably because my husband knows what an utter control freak I am, he bought the package where Bruce would just hand over the digital card with all the photos on it, and I got to edit them all myself. Cool, huh?
A big mahalo {thank you} to Bruce and Kolleen…really the sweetest couple, and they were so genuinely pleased to have surprised me {and I think got a kick out of watching me..us…cry so much!} And for the record, the fact that he totally surprised me is a feat in itself. Those who know me will attest to that fact! It’s not that I’m nosy or demanding…I just need to know things ;D

Okay, okay, so the big question is…did we still trash the dress?
Of course we did! Stay tuned for that one…

…that’s what Dad said every time he looked at his baby girl. So sweet!
Miss Rhyleigh is not technically a newborn…at least not by portrait standards. At nearly 3 months old and about 12 lbs (she was only 5lbs ish at birth), this little princess certainly would not fit into any of my newborn stuff. And she made me WORK! This age is notoriously difficult to do portraits of, because they don’t sit up but certainly don’t want to lay down all the time, and a lot of them aren’t happy unless they have prime seating on somebody’s lap. Even if they sleep they wake much more easily than newborns if you try to move them about. That being said, once I tired her out enough, she nearly fell asleep doing family shots outside, and she snoozed very well for me after that so we were able to get some much-coveted sleeping shots as well. Thanks Mom and Dad for being so patient while I waited her out
Since Miss Rhyleigh is our newest Watch Me Grow babe, we’ll be seeing more of her in the next several months!

When this momma asked me if she could brings props, I said “Of course!” It’s always a fun change of pace for me to incorporate personal props into the shoot, and it’s nice to have something meaningful to the family with the babe. I certainly wasn’t expecting the first request…a curling stone! Despite it not being curling season, some kind soul dug out a stone of the family’s for them to borrow. Dad also brought along his electric guitar, which just happened to go great with the new cap I found. Rock on!
Baby Max showed up asleep and slept pretty much right to the end for me. Thank you Max! Mom said that she kept him up beforehand, and as usual it worked! At points he was so floppy, his limbs wouldn’t even stay in place! He woke up after the stone just in time to give us a sour apple face. Can you say ADORABLE?

Update: I forgot to add this one of the fam…awesome cam contact, and a little smirk to boot!

I was having flashbacks last Monday…

Zac attack! {from the bunny sessions}
Sir Zaccary returned to the Nest with big sis in tow for his 1 year cake smash. I was really looking forward to this one since he was such a character for me last time. As it turns out, he’s become a little shyer in his old age. He gets around really well though…he climbed into the wagon, nearly climbed out of it, and stood up by himself a few times. Soon he’ll be tearing around the house {and everywhere else} after his big sister Katelynn.
He was so into the backyard and play dishes that he wasn’t much interested in his cake, even though it had a cool caterpillar on it. Yeah, not that kind of caterpillar! Finally once Mom sat him right in front he decided he’d try some chocolate on for size. Fits him pretty good, I think. He certainly wore more of it than he ate! Katelynn even let me get some shots of her smiling this time, so it was an all around great time. Cake smashes always are!

Seriously, how cute are these two?

My first babe to travel from Burlington, Miss Veronica had her big sis in tow. Isabella is two and yes, you can tell. Cute as a button she is, but unfortunately a little camera shy, and still wary of the new arrival. She had fun playing outside though, and luckily hubby was home and able to catch a few shots of her smiling and laughing as she played with her daddy. Veronica was already 13 days old at this session, and when she didn’t look a bit sleepy even after eating I was a bit worried we would be out of luck for sleep shots. She is another baby who fell asleep faster on the bean bag than in someone’s arms, and once she was out we went to town! I finally got to use my stork pouch, yay! Veronica was really such an easy baby to work with…she barely made a peep even when she was awake. Sweet girls!

P.S. The stork pouch shot is not a composite (two pics pasted together), but neither is she hanging freely from anything…hubby was holding her with two hands the entire time. Safety first!

So right before we closed for summer break, this momma contacted me about her newborn baby girl asking for a session. I just couldn’t say no and I squeezed them in the day before vacation started. I’m so glad I did! I briefly met this couple when I photographed daddy’s brother’s twin boys. They happened to be visiting the day of the session and they showed up just as I was cleaning up. The rest is history
“She doesn’t really sleep that much.” Not exactly the words a newborn photographer wants to hear, but we always go with baby’s flow. And since she was two weeks old already, we figured we’d get what we could get. Luckily, she e v e n t u a l l y fell into a deep sleep, and then she pretty much let me do what I wanted. Yay! Including some props I’ve had for a while but haven’t gotten to use yet. Mommy and Daddy were quite surprised she ended up sleeping so hard, and I’m sure she kept them up all night afterwards! It was worth it though…which is what I always tell parents. Especially when they’ve just been peed on. But that didn’t happen this time, lucky dad! Thank you so much for coming; it was great having you!
This is the first time I got some shots of the outfit baby arrived in…but she was sleeping in the carseat and her outfit matched the setup so I took advantage of the situation! She woke up when we undressed her though…

This is one of the handmade blankets Bridget was given…LOVED it.

No one could believe how much she loved this bucket. Dad joked about bringing it home for nap times!

Safety first! She is only about 2″ from the floor, and hubby is handholding the basket. I painted out the floor after and took away him and his shadow.
